October 2008

Bel Arts Trio will perform Wed. Oct. 15 for the L.A. Phil Westside ladies at the Riviera Country Club (noon).

Trimotif will perform at CSU Fullereton at 8 p.m. on Saturday the 18th (check out the website); that's Bill Cunliff, the wonderful jazz pianist-composer; myself on flute; Chris Bleth on oboe; and Phoebe Ray on bassoon--PLUS Bill's fabulous rhythm section of Joe La Barbara, drums; and Derek Oles, bass.

Trio will perform first, then Trimotif will join them for Bill's 3 movement piece, "Nostalgia in
Corcovado", plus some jazz standards as well (everyone in Trimotif improvises as well as playing classical).


November 2008

November 1 and 2 are the Brandenburg Concertos, LACO, at 8pm Alex Theatre and 7pm Royce Hall. (Flute featured in #2, #4,#5). Margaret Batjer, concertmaster of LACO, will lead.

Trimotif again Friday November 7, 8:30 at Boston Court in Pasadena (or is it Glendale).

Santa Monica Symphony on Nov. 8 at Santa Monica Civic, 7:30, NO ADMISSION CHARGED, will feature LACO violinist Katia Popov in Bruch Violin Concerto, plus some Wagner and Tsychovsky Romeo and Juilet.

Nov. 23, my student Nancy Gray will perform Nielsen Concerto at 8:00 at CSUN.


December 2008

LACO December 13 (Alex) and 14 (Royce) featuring Strauss Serenade for Winds; marimba concerto by Jalbert (Makoto Nakura); and Haydn #31 (Horn Signal).


 




2009

January 10 and 11 LACO featuring Yoyo Ma, cello, plus Beethoven Symphony #7.

Jan. 18 Santa Monica Symphony with Javanni De Pedro in Brahms Piano Concerto #2 (2:30 pm concert). Santa Monica Civic Aud.

January 24 Alex and 25 Royce, LACO performs; Jeffrey Kahane will conduct; includes Damien Montano's (LACO 2nd bassoon and well-known composer) world premiere for the orchestra, "Overture". Also Ingrid Fliter performs Chopin Piano Concerto #1; plus Mendelsohn's Scottish Symphony.

Week of February 1, performances at Rancho La Puerta, Tecate Mexico with super pianist Bryan Pezzone and engaging cellist David Low. Repertoire will feature my Carmen Fantasy, Jungle Fantasy by Ese Morales, Mower's Sonata Latino and other classical and Latin/jazz selections.

February 14, a performance of music for flute and string trio in the "Masters in the Chapel" series in Santa Monica (I'll get the name of the church later, it's a repeat of a concert we did several years ago there).

Big concert for me, February 21 (8:00 Alex) and Feb. 22 (7:00 Royce). World premiere of my "CARMEN FANTASY REVISED FOR LACO" for SOLO FLUTE AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA; Lalo Schifrin's new "Tangos Concertantes" (USA premiere); and Haydn Oxford Symphony.I have re-orchestrated much of the Carmen, performed previously with Alvin Mills and the Brentwood Symphony; and have added two new sections featuring the orchestra and several solo instruments therein.

February 27 and March 1, Bel Arts Trio will perform on the South Bay Chamber Music Series (David Shostac, flute; John Walz, cello; and James Smith, guitar and arranger). In between those dates, on February 28, the Trio will also perform at USC Newman Hall at the annual gala Jim Smith and Friends concert (admission free!).

April 18 and 19, LACO, Mozart Symphony #31; Schoenburg Chamber Symphony #1; Ravel Piano Concerto in G (David Fung); Beethoven Symphony #1.

April 30, Baroque Concert, 7:00 Zipper Hall at Colburn School: DAVID SHOSTAC PERFORMS VIVALDI PICCOLO CONCERTO WITH ANTHONY NEWMAN.

Family concert May 3 at Alex 2:00.

May 9 recital in South Bay--fund raiser, contact Pat Maki for info.

May 16 and 17, LACO concerts featuring Ginastera "Variaciones Concertantes"; Theofenidis "Radiant Mind" (Premiere); and Schumann Piano Concerto (Jonathan Biss).

May 24, Santa Monica Symphony (free) 7:30 S.M. Civic Aud.; Haydn Symphonia Concertant (Michael Emery, Catherine del Russo, Ernest Ehrhardt, and David Riddles); Mend. Scottish and Bizet Jeux d'enfants. (Dr. Alan Gross conducts).

May 30, Christopher Parkening International Guitar Competition finals with LACO at Pepperdine University, Malibu.

June 7, 8:00 Royce Hall. Silent Movie, "The Gold Rush" by Chaplin; LACO and Timothy Brock perform Brock's score.
