News

February 2010

recording News and Updates

I'm just now re-releasing the Romantic Flute CDs on Pacific Rainbow, as "The NEW Romantic Flute: Volumes 1 and 2" (hopefully before Valentine's Day), newly re-mastered and integrated.

Have been working on a recording with Barry Manilow, and had a nice exposed flute solo on "Love Me Tender". Beautiful arrangements by Barry and Pat Williams, who always writes wonderfully lush stuff.

Working with some of my favorite doubling woodwind players on this date-- Gary Foster, Bob Shepard, Gene Cipriano, Greg Huckins.

Summer Project

Update February 2010: Coming soon: Vivaldi Flute Concertos with David Shostac and the Song of the Angels Flute Orchestra!

The big project for the summer and almost completed has been a recording of 7 Vivaldi flute concertos with a terrific flute orchestra, called Song of the Angels.

This is a loving and dedicated group, put together and run by Frederick and Mary Staff. Frederick is a long-time colleague and friend, and his wife Mary is the master librarian and a member of the ensemble. The recording should be unique, in that it is all flutes-- C flutes, altos, basses, contra basses in C and F, and double contra. I did most of the arrangements and led the group, with assistance from Mike Hyziak and several strong players.

Gordon Halligan and Roland Tso propelled the dynamite contra section, which produces amazing power and energy on those bass lines.

Recent Performances

Recent performances at Rancho La Puerta featured guitarist James Smith; violinist and violist Connie Kupka; cellist David Speltz; and myself. It's a shame that the Ranch has had a smaller than usual (though by no means less enthusiastic) attendance because of a combination of the economy, drug wars, and swine flu scares. The food alone is worth the trip!

recording iTunes

The Bel Arts Trio CD (D. Shostac, flute; John Walz, cello; and James Smith, guitar) is available on iTunes, remastered for a very clear and brilliant sound by Marty Krystall;

Also, the same for "Matrix", the fusion band which was way ahead of its time in 1973, also remastered and featuring David Shostac, flutes and saxes; Jack Grassel, guitars; Dennis Klopfer, keyboards; David Phillips, basses; and Andy DoLuca, drums and percussion.

I have been extremely fortunate to perform with the great players on both these recordings. - David

Four of davids CDs are now also available on iTunes.

You can search under 'shostac' at http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/

Memorizing the first movement of Mozart in D.

I'm just having a little problem memorizing the rest of the first movement of Mozart in D. Do you have any hints, I have 2 1/2 pages memorized, but I keep getting stuck.

recording Nostalgia in Corcovado

There are a great number of fantastic musicians in Los Angeles, and it is my great good fortune to be able to work with many of them.  One is jazz/classical pianist and composer Bill Cunliffe, and as a member of the group Trimotif, I recorded his three movement suite "Nostalgia in Corcovado" with Bill, piano; Phoebe Ray, bassoon; and Chris Bleth, oboe-- plus Bill's fantastic rhythm section.

Check out www.Trimotif.com for more info.
